2016 Swim Season Coaching

Head Coach, John Oliver, 2016

Head Coach John Oliver
Catalina Terrace Marlins 2016

Hello! I am John Oliver and I am a senior studying Political Science and Economics at the University of Arizona.

I swam competitively all throughout my childhood. I learned to swim from Coach Devin at El Dorado Aquatic Club (EDAC). While at EDAC, I swam for their SAAA and USA swim team. Coach Devin taught me the fundamentals of swimming and ignited my passion for the sport.

I went on to swim for FORD Aquatics in high school. I enjoyed tremendous success at the high school level as a Sabino Sabercat. I was fortunate to be able to travel around the country for swim meets and watch Olympians first hand. Swimming competitively in high school inspired me to constantly achieve new heights.

After high school, I swam for the University of Utah. While swimming for the UofU, I was able to learn from top-tier coaches and be a part of the best swimming conference in the nation. I recently transferred to the University of Arizona and currently manage the swim team. As a manager I have the amazing opportunity to watch and learn from nationally renowned Head Coach, Rick DeMont, daily.

While I was a student at the University of Utah, I was an assistant coach of the Salt Lake City Hurricanes. The Hurricanes had over 200 swimmers, these swimmers ranged in age from 4 to 18 years-old! I coached all age groups and absolutely loved being on deck. I am beyond excited to transition into the Head Coaching role at Catalina Terrace. Catalina Terrace has an energetic tradition of success and fun, and I look forward to continuing that tradition.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime.

Assistant Coach Isa Rubio
Catalina Terrace Marlins 2016

Hello! My name is Isabelle. I will be a junior next semester at the University of Arizona. I am studying psychology and marine biology.

I learned to swim when I was 4. I soon after joined my first swim team: Desert Waves/Dolphins as an SAAA and USA swimmer. I bounced around a few teams including JCC, and FORD, but the one team I stuck with each year was Catalina Terrace. Catalina Terrace taught me what a team should really be, a family.

I have coached Green Hills/49ers for 2 years when I was in high school and have been a lifeguard since I was the right age to be able to. I am clearly drawn to the water!

2015 Swim Season Coaching

Head Coach, Chad Castillo, 2015

Coach Chad Castillo
Catalina Terrace Marlins 2015

I began swimming at the age of 9 on a SAAA team on the west side of town. It was the hardest thing I had ever done in my life!! I nearly quit, but I kept going back to practice because of my friends on the team. After a while I could swim the length of the pool without stopping, and understand the funny “swim lingo” coming out of my coaches mouth. I learned that I enjoyed the competition and the challenge of trying to better my race times every meet.I decided to try swimming year round, and quickly found that my first introduction to swimming was not as hard as I had thought!!  Luckily enough those same friends were on the year round team, and kept me coming back to practice. I began to grow in the sport and decided to swim in high school, where I became an All American.I did not swim in college but carried on with swimming as a coach. Coaching the high school kids helped me realize that I wanted to be a teacher. So, 16 years after experiencing that ridiculously hard 1st swim practice, I found what is truly the hardest thing in the world, teaching 7th grade science. However; having already been through a few of the “hardest” days of my life, I knew that this too would pass.

I have been lucky enough to not only be a part of great swim teams, but great swim communities. I believe that this is what we have at Catalina Terrace. I think that every swimmer on our team has the chance to learn and love the sport of swimming because of the people here supporting them. This support will not only help the swimmers enjoy their summer and create life long memories, but it will also help them handle those “hardest moment in my life” moments when they come around.

I am privileged to be a part of this team. I hope that I can help to create the same atmosphere here that I experienced as a young swimmer. Thank you for all of your help and I look forward to working with you and your family.

Coach Lane Breshears
Catalina Terrace Marlins 2015

I first began to swim at the Racquet Club as an infant, and later competed with the Marlins at Catalina Terrace. I have such fond memories of all those swim meets and learning the ketchup stroke! After a few seasons the family moved to Brisbane, Australia, land of the gorgeous beaches! In Australia swimming is very popular! I quickly got signed up and my swim club became my new family in this strange new country. Throughout high school I was a full-time competitive swimmer, constantly rubbing elbows with inspiring Olympians Cate and Bronte Campbell. My coach Robert Cusack was an Olympian medalist and Simon Cusack is currently recognized as the Australian National Coach. I feel so lucky to have swam with such fantastic swimmers and learned so much from great technical coaches. I am just as excited to be working with all the swimmers here at Catalina Terrace! Who knows how many potential Olympians we have swimming with us?!
